Leora Rosner was born in New York, raised in Texas, aged in Israel and has been living in Amsterdam since 1975. After a training at the Bezalel Art Academy where she became enamoured with photography, she worked as an assistant to a photographer at United Press International and in later years, worked as a freelancer with the Netherlands Body Building Federation, Scapino Ballet and the Netherlands Dance Theater. In 2007, having seen an environmental documentary, she decided to begin campaigning and demonstrating for environmental issues, writing to US senators and European legislators at national levels to take the necessary measures to clean up the environment. Like many far-reaching campaigns, she and her campaigning colleagues made the decision to start locally at a grass-roots level and together, began organising demonstrations for the environment culminating in a large demonstration on the 24th of October 2009 leading up to COP 15 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conference_of_the_Parties) . On that day there were over 5000 demonstrations worldwide. The time had then come to stop talking and take action and so with two others, Leora started the Netwerk Groene Daken working together with two departments of city hall and city council members in order to promote the greening of rooftops in Amsterdam.

Since then, they have pushed through a yearly subsidy for planting rooftops and were even able to simplify the process. Last year, Leora founded the Growing Air Foundation to promote and raise funds for re-forestation across the world. In her Girl Geek Dinner talk, she will be talking about the rhyme and reason, the whys and wherefores of greening rooftops, and why it is important to cool down our cities in light of climate change and more. Planting today for tomorrow!
